Just
in time inventory management
(JIT)
This is a process that can probably
save a manufacturer more money
than any other single production
strategy.
As a supplier of components,
Otto-Max and its associated companies
have been instrumental in introducing
customers to the JIT concept
and working with them to implement
this amazing cost-saving principle.
The process was first used by
the Ford Motor Company over 80
years ago as discussed by Henry
Ford in My
Life and Work (1923).
He described how he found that
in buying materials, it is not
worthwhile to buy for other than
immediate needs. The company
bought only enough to fit into
the plan of production, taking
into consideration the state
of transportation at the time.
If the strategy was managed properly,
an even flow of materials could
be assured and it would not be
necessary to carry much stock
whatsoever. This would obviously
save a great deal of money for
it would not only allow a rapid
turnover but it would also decrease
the amount of money tied up in
materials. This was the first
documented use of JIT component
management techniques.
However, for JIT inventory management
to work properly, a company's suppliers
must be able to accommodate the ordering
timeline.
To a great degree, a JIT inventory
process relies on the efficient
monitoring of the usage of components
in the production of goods and ordering
replacement parts that arrive shortly
before they are needed. Many purchasing
departments employ a just in time
purchasing and inventory control
software.
The benefits are pervasive and include
lower total system costs and improved
product quality. A good deal of evidence
is available to support the claim
of improved performance derived
from adoption of a JIT strategy.
Some plants have reduced in-process
inventory more than 50% and lead
time more than 80%.
Let Otto-Max personnel work with
you to not only supply superior components
but do so in an extremely cost effective
way.
We work with steel. Flat steel. Coiled
steel. Hardened steel. Alloy steel.
Our group has been providing manufacturers
with steel components for almost
ONE HUNDRED YEARS!
And we have been doing it more cost
effectively than just about anyone
else. We are so much more than just
springs and suspensions and we are
very proud of what we do.

More
good news.
Otto-Max's ECO-GREEN manufacturing
strategies are an additional
method of reducing costs.
To start with, you have to look
closely at the economics of the
Otto-Max / McAllister hydro-electric
induction heating process. The
basic principles of induction
heating have been understood
and applied to manufacturing
since the 1920s. During World
War II, the technology developed
rapidly to meet urgent wartime
requirements for a fast, reliable
process to harden metal engine
parts. More recently, the focus
on lean, green manufacturing
techniques and an emphasis on
improved quality control have
led to a rediscover of induction
technology.
What makes this heating
method so unique? In the most
common heating methods, a torch
or open flame is applied directly
to the metal part. But with induction
heating, heat is actually "induced" within
the part itself by circulating
electrical currents.
As our general manager, Ted Parker
explains it, "we try to give
our customers a clear idea of what
induction heating is, and how this
non-contract method of heating
works so fast and is so efficient.
The alternating current in the
work coil sets up an electromagnetic
field that creates a circulating
current in the work piece. This
circulating current flows against
the resistivity of the material
and generates heat. It's really
that simple! In these days of continually
rising costs for raw materials
and production time, induction
heating allows us to transfer the
economic efficiencies to our customers
and hold the line of price increases
as well as be proud of the extremely
low environmental impact of the
process."
Think
about this...
Are you building machinery? Or
maybe storage silos, bins or buildings?
Or any other type of metal product?
Do you use any kind of steel components?
Are you looking to save money and
increase the quality of your products?
An old customer recently ordered
a batch of draw-bars for his snowplough
business. We had made these bars
for years using natural gas and
torches - not the greenest way
to manufacture the parts! Now they
will be made BETTER, FASTER AND
more COST EFFECTIVELY using our
induction heating process.
